Case Study – Scanning of Bran Castle

Xplorate Group contributes to the preservation of National Heritage: 3D scanning of Bran Castle

Bran Castle – a symbol of Romania and the myths surrounding it, known as the “Dracula Castle,” continues to fascinate through its medieval architecture and gothic atmosphere.

To support the conservation and promotion of Romania’s cultural heritage, Xplorate Group provided 3D laser scanning and 3D modeling services for this national symbol.

The 3D scanning was conducted to capture every detail of the castle, aiming to support restoration work and preserve the authenticity of this monument.

The project highlights the role of 3D laser scanning technologies in preserving history, showcasing the beauty and importance of Bran Castle.

Project objective

The primary objective was to deliver a point cloud and a 3D Revit model of Bran Castle to support restoration and conservation work. The 3D model offers detailed documentation of the castle’s structure and architecture.

Project implementation

The Xplorate Group team utilized terrestrial and aerial 3D laser scanning technology to capture all architectural details of Bran Castle.

Equipment used:

  • RTC 360 Scanner: The fastest laser scanner in the world, featuring the first positioning system (VIS) for indoor use, capable of capturing a 360-degree panorama with five HDR exposures in one minute.
  • Rock Robotic R3 PRO LIDAR Sensor: Designed for high performance in areas with dense vegetation or difficult access, compatible with multiple software platforms for data analysis and interpretation.

Involved Team

  • A land surveyor experienced in 3D scanning and 3D modeling
  • Two engineers specialized in processing and post-processing the point cloud data (3D modeling).

Methodology

  • Capturing 3D data using the RTC 360 scanner, complemented with drone imagery for enhanced accuracy.
  • Approximate scanned area: 3,770 sqm, including all interior spaces and exterior architectural elements.
  • Processing the point cloud to create a digital version of the castle.

Project Deliverables

  • 3D Revit Model: Including floor plans and facades.
  • 2D Deliverables Derived from the 3D Model:
    • 10 cross-sections providing a detailed perspective of the castle.
    • 30 interior elevations allowing a thorough analysis of interior spaces and highlighting key architectural details.

Project Impact

  1. Heritage Preservation:
The 3D model, as a digital replica of the castle, provides a reference point for future restoration projects.
  2. Accessibility and Education:
Virtual tourism becomes possible through digital access to the 3D models. Students, researchers, and the general public can explore the castle interactively without the need for physical visits.

Challenges and Solutions

One significant challenge was accessing hard-to-reach areas such as towers and narrow corridors. These spaces were successfully measured using the RTC 360 scanner, which captured information even from the most challenging angles.

Conclusion

The 3D scanning project of Bran Castle, carried out by Xplorate Group, is a remarkable example of using technology to preserve cultural heritage.

By generating 3D deliverables, the project ensures the safeguarding of the historical and cultural values of one of the world’s most famous castles. This initiative supports conservation, education, and tourism, bringing Bran Castle closer to a global audience.
